Women's Soccer Falls in Close Battle at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Connecticut College women's soccer team gave everything they had, but came up short, falling to host Colby 1-0 on Saturday from Serdjenian Field. With the loss, Conn falls to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in conference play, while Colby improves to 5-1 on the year and 2-1 in conference action.

Conn opened the game on the front foot, recording the first shot of the contest at 8:57 as Clare Mulvihill (West Caldwell, N.J.) let an effort go, but unfortunately rang it off the crossbar. Colby answered with their first shot just over two minutes later, however Ella Kahrl (Wellesley, Mass.) made the save.

The teams traded opportunities, but neither side was able to find the opening marker. However, with time running down in the opening 45 minutes, the Mules opened the scoring. With just over four and a half minutes remaining, Catherine Watrous snuck a shot in at the far post off an assist from Annie Leibich, as Colby led 1-0 at the break.

The Camels had an early chance to even the score, as Conn was awarded a corner kick. Alexa Weiner (Fairfield, Conn.) took the corner, but Conn was unable to convert, as Colby remained in front. Lilla Kate Tucker (Marietta, Ga.) had a look at goal for the Camels to even the score, but her effort was stopped by MK Marshall in the Mules cage.

Colby had a chance to extend the lead with 20 minutes remaining, as Charlotte Johnson was played in on goal, but Kahrl came up with a big save for Conn. With time running down, Conn earned a freekick from just outside the edge of the box. Weiner put the freekick towards goal, but her effort was punched away, as Colby held on for the 1-0 win.

Colby held a 10-7 edge on total shots, while both teams recorded six on target, while Conn had an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks.

Kahrl got the start in goal, making five saves. Five Camels recorded at least one shot, with Mulvihill and Ella Gazo (Colchester, Vt.) both recording two, with both of Gazo's efforts ending up on target. Mae Mastrullo (Hudson, Mass.), Mulvihill, Tucker, and Weiner all notched one shot on target.

Marshall got the nod for Colby between the sticks, recording six saves. Watrous tallied the lone goal, while Liebich added an assist.

Conn continues their season-long six game road trip, as the Camels head to Willimantic, Conn. to take on Eastern Connecticut at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
