WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team scored twice in the second half to overcome a halftime deficit to defeat host Eastern Connecticut State 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon from the Mansfield Outdoor Complex. With the win, Conn improves to 4-3 on the year, while Eastern Connecticut falls to 2-6
Conn had an early chance as Lilla Kate Tucker (Marietta, Ga.) put a shot on target just 39 seconds in, but the effort was stopped by Alex Ignatowicz. Four minutes later however, Eastern Connecticut opened the scoring. The Warriors got a counter attack and capitalized, as Hailey Cocca found the back of the net as Eastern led 1-0 just 4:44 in.
The Camels answered with the next two shots, after falling behind, but Gazo put a shot wide and Clare Mulvihill (West Caldwell, N.J.) had her shot stopped. The teams traded chances for much of the remainder of the half, but neither side found the twine, as the Warriors led 1-0 at the break.
The teams traded chances through the opening 15 minutes of the second half, but it was Conn that was able to find the back of the net, tying the game at one. Alexa Weiner (Fairfield, Conn.) took a corner, connecting with the head of Zola Alcaro (Norwell, Mass.) who was able to head the ball home at 61:51.
It looked as if the game was headed towards a draw, but in the final eight minutes, Conn capitalized on an opportunity and took the lead. Katelyn Hardwick (Milton, Ga.) played a ball down the line to Mae Mastrullo (Hudson, Mass.) who crossed it into the box where Ella Natal (Harriman, N.Y.) buried it just under the crossbar to make it 2-1 Conn.
Conn outshot Eastern Connecticut 12-10 overall, holding an 8-6 advantage on shots on target and a 13-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Ella Kahrl (Wellesley, Mass.) recorded five saves in goal for the Camels. Alcaro and Natal both recorded one goal, while Hardwick, Mastrullo, and Weiner all chipped in one assist.
Ignatowicz got the start in goal making four saves in the first half, before being replaced by Kaeden Dublin who notched two saves in the second half. Cocca tallied the lone Warriors goal, while Morgan Kelly added an assist.
Conn heads north to continue its road trip on Saturday, as the Camels travel to Middlebury, Vt. to take on #7 Middlebury at 11 a.m. in a NESCAC clash.
