Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Weiner's Freekick Propels Women's Soccer Past JWU 2-1

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Alexa Weiner (Fairfield, Conn.) scored a freekick with 10 minutes remaining to lift the Connecticut College women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Johnson and Wales on Wednesday afternoon from Freeman Field.

It was a slow first half, as neither side was able to generate much. Conn had the first shot of the afternoon, as Blessing Kieh (Monrovia, Liberia) forced an early save from Kyla Stamilio. Maia Kafer (Philadelphia, Pa.) stopped the only shot she faced, before a late effort from Claire Chace (Bristol, R.I.) was denied, keeping the game scoreless at the break.

Conn opened the second half on the front foot and took the lead 13 minutes in. Paige Maffei (Acton, Mass.) dropped a pass off to Chace who fired from outside the box, beating Stamilio to make it 1-0. The lead was short lived however, as the Wildcats caught a bounce.

A ball was played into the box, ping-ponging off multiple heads before falling to Camilia Leiva who evened the score in the 64th minute. Conn pushed looking for the go ahead marker but were unable to find it.

Then, with just 10 minutes remaining, the Camels had a golden opportunity as Chace was taken down on the edge of the box. Weiner stepped up to the freekick and delivered a low drive to the far post, beating Stamilio to make it 2-1. Conn saw out the final minutes to earn the 2-1 win.

Conn outshot Johnson and Wales 13-7, as both sides put four efforts on target, while the Wildcats held a 4-2 edge on corner kicks.

Kafer picked up the win in net, finishing with three saves. Chace and Weiner paced the offense with a goal apiece, while Maffei chipped in an assist.

Stamilio got the start in goal, finishing with two saves. The Wildcats attack was paced by Leiva, who tallied the lone goal.

Conn (4-5, 0-5 NESCAC) returns to action next Wednesday as the Camels travel to Bridgewater, Mass. to take on Bridgewater State at 7:00 p.m.
