BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Connecticut College women's soccer team battled tough, but ultimately fell to host Bowdoin 2-0 on Saturday afternoon from Pickard Field. Conn falls to 3-2 on the year and 0-2 in NESCAC play, while Bowdoin improves to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
It was a smart start for both sides in the opening 10 minutes as neither side was able to create much. Conn got the first shot of the afternoon as Lilla Kate Tucker (Marietta, Ga.) forced a save from Charlotte Iannone at 10:29.
Bowdoin responded with their first look at goal, but Maia Kafer (Philadelphia, Pa.) answered with a save on Kendrick LaPrade. Kafer followed up with two more saves, before a late chance from Ella Gazo (Colchester, Vt.) was turned aside by Iannone, as the game was scoreless at the break.
The Polar Bears nearly opened the scoring five minutes into the second half, as Cadence Lee got a shot around Kafer, but Emma Ward (East Setauket, N.Y.) was there to clear the ball off the line. Conn grew into the second half, putting pressure on the Bowdon back line.
The Camels came close to the opener with 26 minutes left. Blessing Kieh (Monrovia, Liberia) worked down the right sideline, before playing a ball into the box, finding Claire Chace (Bristol, R.I.) who's shot went just wide.
Bowdoin responded with a stretch of offensive pressure. Kafer came up with a save at 74:50, but just 30 seconds later, Sienna Massod found the back of the net to put the Polar Bears in front 1-0. A minute and a half later, Kayley Huleatt doubled the advantage for Bowdoin, making it 2-0.
Bowdoin outshot Conn 18-6, including 12-3 on shots on targets, with Polar Bears holding a slim 3-1 edge on corner kicks.
Kafer got the start between the sticks, finishing with eight saves. Chace led the way with two shots and one on target, with Gazo and Tucker both adding an effort on net.
Iannone got the win for the Polar Bears in net, making three saves. Huleatt paced Bowdoin with a goal and an assist, while Masood added a goal.
Conn returns to action on Saturday, as the Camels return home to take on Colby at 11:00 a.m. on Freeman Field.
