NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team hung tough, but ultimately fell to visiting Colby College 2-0 on Saturday from Freeman Field.
It was a slow start as both defenses limited any chances in the first 15 minutes. Colby got the first shot of the contest as Annie Liebich forced a save from Maia Kafer (Philadelphia, Pa.). Conn answered with their first shot at the half hour mark, as Lucy Hurlbut (Westport, Conn.) made MK Marshall come up with a stop.
Conn moved to the front foot over the final quarter of an hour, as Caroline Camp (New London, N.H.) let a long range effort go that was stopped. However, with just over a minute left, Conn earned a free kick from midfield. Alexa Weiner (Fairfield, Conn.) put the ball into the box, falling in between Marshall and Claire Chace (Bristol, R.I.) who unfortunately collided, as Chace was given a red card for the contact, with the game remaining scoreless at the break.
The Mules capitalized early in the second half, with the extra player, as Liebich found the back of the net just six minutes in to make it 1-0. The Camels defense did well to soak up the pressure from Colby, keeping the deficit at one.
However, with six and a half minutes remaining, Avery Del Col doubled the advantage for Colby on a long range effort. Conn had a late chance as the Camels were awarded an indirect free kick in the box in the final minute. Ella Gazo (Colchester, Vt.) took the shot, banging the effort off the crossbar and staying out, as Conn fell 2-0.
Colby outshot Conn 17-4, using the extra player to their advantage, outshooting the Camels 15-1 in the second half. The Mules had eight shots on target to the Camels two, while holding a 9-2 advantage on corner kicks.
Kafer got the start between the sticks, finishing with six saves. Camp and Hurlbut each put one shot on target, while Gazo struck the woodwork.
Marshall got the start in net for the Mules, finishing with two saves, while Sadie Gardner got the win, playing the second half in goal. Del Col and Liebich each recorded one goal, with Claire Walsh adding an assist.
Conn (3-3, 0-3 NESCAC) is back in action tomorrow as the Camels take on #8 Tufts at 12:00 p.m. on Freeman Field.
