Women's Soccer Hangs Tough with #10 Middlebury

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team hung tough, before falling to #10 Middlebury 1-0 on Saturday from Freeman Field.

Middlebury started fast with three shots on goal in the opening 12 minutes, but Maia Kafer (Philadelphia, Pa.) answered the early challenges. Conn came right back with their first shot just seconds later, as Ella Gazo (Colchester, Vt.) forced a save from Frankie Marston. The Panthers forced two more saves from Kafer, but the game remained scoreless at the break.

Kafer came up with another stop early in the second half, before Claire Chace (Bristol, R.I.) missed a shot high. Conn built some pressure through the middle of the half, as Blessing Kieh (Monrovia, Liberia) and Paige Maffei () were turned aside by Livia Davidson.

However, with just under 15 minutes remaining, Middlebury broke the deadlock. Kacy Walker played a ball into the box, connecting with Fiona Linnau who snuck a shot inside the post to make it 1-0. Conn tried to equalize over the dying minutes, but fell short, falling 1-0.

Middlebury outshot Conn 15-4, including 8-3 on shots on target, while holding a 4-1 edge on corner kicks.

Kafer got the start between the sticks, finishing with seven saves. Three Camels recorded one shot on target, as Gazo, Kieh, and Maffei all put efforts on net.

Marston got the nod to start, finishing with one save in the first half, before Davidson earned the win, making two saves in the second half. Linnau led the Panthers with one goal, while Walker added an assist.

Conn (3-5, 0-5 NESCAC) returns to action on Wednesday to close out a four game homestand, as the Camels host Johnson and Wales at 4:00 p.m. on Freeman Field.
