Women's Soccer Drops NESCAC Opener to #6 Amherst

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team dropped their NESCAC opener, falling to #6 Amherst 3-0 on Saturday from Freeman Field. With the loss, Conn falls to 1-1 on the year and 0-1 in conference play, while Amherst improves to 2-0 and 1-0 in NESCAC action.

It was a slow start for both teams, but it was Amherst that had the first two chances of the game, with both shots going wide of the target. Maia Kafer (Philadelphia, Pa.) was forced to make a save in the 20th minute before Conn had their first shot.

Lucy Hurlbut (Westport, Conn.) put an effort on target in the 25th minute, but her shot was stopped by Lulu Fickes. Kafer came up with another stop in the Camels net, but just before halftime, the Mammoths opened the scoring. Emma Darling connected with Jessica Lomo who found the back of the net, to put Amherst in front 1-0 at the break.

Ella Gazo (Colchester, Vt.) had a look at goal early in the second half, but her effort went wide. However, the Mammoths doubled the advantage at 52:24 as Darling found the back of the net. Kafer came up with another stop, trying to keep the Camels in striking distance, but with 17 minutes remaining, Millie McLeod pushed the lead to 3-0.

Conn pushed over the final 15 minutes, looking to get back in the contest. Emma Ward (East Setauket, N.Y.) had a shot turned aside, before Gazo put two efforts just off the target. The best chance for the Camels came with two and a half minutes to play. Conn was awarded a free kick, where Una McCorry's (Bronxville, N.Y.) shot was tipped onto the crossbar by Molly Davidson, before Virginia Head (Acton, Mass.) had the rebound turned away, as the Camels fell 3-0.

Amherst outshot Conn 20-9, including 6-4 on shots on target, while holding an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks.

Kafer got the start between the sticks, finishing with three saves. Gazo and Hurlbut led the way with three shots apiece, while Head, Hurlbut, McCorry, and Ward all put one effort on target.

Fickes got the win in net, finishing with one save in 76 minutes, while Davidson closed out the contest making three saves. Darling led the way with a goal and an assist, while Lomo and McLeod each added one goal.

Conn returns to action tomorrow afternoon as the Camels travel to Newport, R.I. to take on Salve Regina at 2:00 p.m.
