NEW LONDON, Conn. --The Connecticut College men's swimming and diving team hosted the Coast Guard Saturday afternoon for a showdown of Route 32 rivals in Lott Natatorium. For the first time, the Camel men prevailed with the Whale Cup victory, outlasting the Bears in a 168-120 triumph.
Junior All-American Sam Gill (Springfield, Ill.) scored a trifecta with three wins. Gill provisionally qualified for the 2013 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championship with a time of 51.52 seconds in the 100 yard backstroke. Gill added wins in the 100 yard free and 100 yard fly with respective times of 47.56 and 51.40 seconds.
Loring Bowen (Summit, N.J.) chipped in with victories in the 200 yard butterfly (1:58.92), the 200 yard back (1:59.23) and the 500 yard free with a time of 4:50.34. Sophomore All-American Kirk Czelewicz (Lowell, Mass.) found the winners circle in the 100 yard breaststroke with a winning time of 1:01.12.
Dylan Steiner (Petaluma, Calif.) registered victories in the 200 yard individual medley as well as the 200 yard breast, posting respective times of 2:02.26 and 2:13.71.
In the 400 yard medley relay, the Camel foursome comprised of Sean Paquette (Middletown, R.I.), Kirk Czelewicz, Loring Bowen and Drew Andre (Carlisle, Mass.) teamed up for a victory in 3:35.96.
