Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.--Cedric Charlier (Baltimore, Md.) headed in a cross from Connor Keefe (San Diego, Calif.) to put Bowdoin College on top for good as the Polar Bears defeated Connecticut College 2-1 in a hard fought NESCAC contest played in front of 700 fans on Tempel Green Saturday.
Bowdoin improves to 6-2-3 overall with a 4-2-2 record in the NESCAC, while the Camels, ranked #7 in New England, fall to 7-3-2 with a 3-3-2 record in conference action.
After a scoreless first half of action, the visitors struck first in the 52nd minute of play. Hunter Miller (Aurora, Ill.) sent a cross through the box to the far post and Andrew Jones (Scarborough, Maine) chipped it in to make it a 1-0 game.
But in the 58th minute, the Camels scored the equalizer. Ibrahim Mutala (Accra, Ghana) refused to give up on a 50-50 ball and was fouled inside the scoring box to earn his team a penalty kick.
Junior Zach Punt (West Hartford, Conn.) cashed in on the opportunity, making it a perfect 3-for-3 for the season on penalty kicks with his blast into the lower left side of the goal.
But the Polar Bears regained their one-goal advantage and the Camels could not get any closer.
Connecticut College out-shot Bowdoin 12-to-10 in the game. The visitors held a 5-to-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Noah Safian (Woodbridge, Conn.) made five saves for the visitors, while Max Nichols (Mill Valley, Calif.) finished with four stops for the hosts.
