Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.--Emmett McConnell (Merion Staion, Pa.) stopped seven shots Wednesday to lead the Wesleyan University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Connecticut College Wednesday.
McConnell made five of his seven stops in the opening half of action en route to his sixth shutout of the season.
With the victory, the Cardinals move 8-5-1 with a 7-3 record in league play. They finish second in the regular season and will host seventh seeded Connecticut College Saturday for a 12:30 p.m. quarterfinal in Middletown. The Camels closed out the regular season with a record of 8-4-2 and are 4-4-2 in conference action.
The only game of the contest occurred 1:44 into the first overtime. Omar Bravo (Santa Ana, Calif.) chipped a ball over the Camel defense that led Matt Lynch (Burlington, N.J.) in on a 1-on-1 for the game-winner.
The Camels had numerous chances to win this game in regulation. With 26:50 remaining in the first stanza, Colin Patch (Providence, R.I.) blasted a free kick from about 20 yards out but McConnell was able to dive to his left for the save.
Early in the second stanza, the Cardinals had a nice opportunity on a set piece of their own. Daniel Issroff (New York, N.Y.) unloaded with a high arching blast but Nichols was able to climb the ladder to make the stop and tip the ball over the cross bar.
With 23:30 remaining in regulation, Doug Garabedian (Salem, Mass.) delivered a corner from the left flag and Pat Devlin (Washington Crossing, Pa.) got his head on it but the re-direction sailed just outside the right post.
With about nine minutes remaining, Nichols made two more saves. He stopped Lynch with a diving punch save from point blank range and then regained his balance to make another stop on Max Jones (Chicago, Ill.). Nichols finished with five saves in the contest
But time expired and the game was scoreless. In the extra session, the Cardinals took full advantage of their first scoring chance to close out the win.
Connecticut College held a 17-to-10 advantage on the shot chart. The hosts also enjoyed a 4-to-0 edge on corner kicks.
