Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine --(Bowdoin College Athletic Communications) The Bowdoin men's soccer team used a pair of second half goals to earn the 2-0 shutout victory over Connecticut College on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears (8-4-0, 4-4-0 NESCAC) returned to Pickard Field and collected their sixth home victory of the season. The Camels (5-7-1, 2-5-1 NESCAC) have not stolen a game from Bowdoin since 2011, but the two teams played to a tie last season.
Connecticut College came out strong in the opening minutes of play, earning a corner kick just 29 seconds into the first half. Pat Devlin lofted a shot towards the goal where teammate Colin Patch was waiting to jump up for the header, but Bowdoin keeper Stevie Van Siclen was there to make the stop. Bowdoin answered with a corner kick and shot on goal of their own, but were unable to capitalize.
Connecticut managed eight shots in the half, with five directed on net forcing Van Siclen to play the ball. Of Bowdoin's three shots in the opening 45 minutes, two required the attention of Connecticut keeper Daniel Cui.
Bowdoin's offense picked up the pace in the second half, finally breaking through the Camels' defense in the 56th minute. Kiefer Solarte dribbled to the corner and crossed a pass to Thomas Henshall who buried a shot bottom left. Cedric Charlier supplied the Polar Bears with an insurance goal in the 72nd minute following a feed from Sam Ward.
Ward Passed into the box where Charlier waited with a defender on his back, but made the turn and saw his shot slide through to the left corner. The Polar Bears allowed no shots in the second half.
Van Siclen made five saves to earn the shutout for the Polar Bears, while Cui made five stops on the opposite end.
Bowdoin outshot the Camels by a slight 9-8 margin as well as a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Bowdoin travels to Babson for another game tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The Camels travel to Trinity next Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. start.
