Box Score MEDFORD, Mass.--(Tufts Athletic Communications) The third seeded Amherst women's volleyball team earned a 3-1 win over sixth seeded Connecticut College in quarterfinal action of the NESCAC volleyball tournament hosted by Tufts on Friday night. Sophomore Maggie Danner led the Jeffs with a match-high 18 kills.
With the win the Jeffs move on in tournament play to face second seeded Williams in a semifinal match at 3:30 pm tomorrow. The Camels end their season with a record of 14-11.
The first set was just about as close as it could be, as it was tied a total of eight times during the course of the match. Junior Andrea Mullaney helped the Camels with five kills in the first set, and the Camels were able to edge the Jeffs, 25-20, to take an early one set lead.
In the second frame, things were much like the first as the two teams exchanged points to start play. After the match was tied at nine, the Lord Jeffs took the lead behind the serve of first-year Asha Walker, and were able to earn the 25-14 victory in the second set to tie the match at one apiece.
Amherst dominated play in the third and fourth sets, winning by similar scores, 25-12, and 25-13, respectively. Mullaney was the offensive leader for the Camels on the day, finishing with nine kills, while rookie Sam Hunter turned in seven of her own. Sophomore Chloe Ainley anchored the defense with 18 digs, and junior Caroline Martin contributed 15 digs as well. The setting duties were split, as rookie Katia Elisman finished with 16 and sophomore Emily Aterbury had 15.
For the Jeffs, Danner finished with the match-high 18 kills and first-year Jennifer Mackinnon and sophomore Nicole Gould each added nine. Junior Katie Warshaw finished with a match-high 22 digs. Walker finished with 13 digs, and added in five service aces across the four sets. Sophomore Kate Bres and junior Nicole Carter split the setting duties, as Carter finished with 25 assists and Bres registered 20.
The Camels were making their 10th consecutive appearance in the NESCAC Championship Friday...Martin has accounted for 739 kills and 849 digs in her first three seasons with the program...Hunter buried a team-best 205 kills to go with 101 kills and 20 blocks in a productive rookie season for Head Coach Josh Edmed's Camels...Sophomore Ella Johnson registered 179 kills and 60 blocks for Connecticut College...Martin tallied a team-high 270 digs while Ainley finished with 241...Mullaney posted a team-best 62 blocks while ranking second on the squad with 25 service aces.
