#20 Amherst College 17, Connecticut College 6 Hegarty Scores Three Goals for Camels

NEW LONDON, Conn.--Quinn Moroney (Manhasset, N.Y.) had three goals and six assists to lead the 20th ranked Amherst College men's lacrosse team to a 17-6 victory at Connecticut College Tuesday. 

The Lord Jeffs improved their record to 9-2 with a 4-2 record in the NESCAC, while the Camels fell to 7-5 with a 3-4 mark in the NESCAC.

Kane Haffey (Duxbury, Mass.) contributed with three goals for the winning side. Devin Acton (Sudbury, Mass.) and Chris Albanese (Westfield, N.J.) both contributed with two goals and an assist for the Lord Jeffs. 

Ryan Cassidy (Wellesley, Mass.) corralled a team-best seven ground balls for the visitors.

Greg Majno (Sudbury, Mass.) posted the victory with six saves in the cage. 

Connecticut College junior Tyler Hegarty (Setauket, N.Y.) scored three goals in the setback for the Camels. Derek Bertolini (Madison, Conn.) scored twice. Briggs Barton (Rye, N.Y.) and JR Hargers (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) both had two assists.

John Hazard (South Setauket, N.Y.) won 14-of-23 faceoffs while collecting three ground balls. 

Sean Mackey (South Hadley, Mass.) finished with nine saves in his first start in the cage for the Camels.

Amherst took its first lead with 9:37 remaining in the opening quarter when Moroney assisted Charlie Gill (Natick, Mass.) to make it a 2-1 game. 

In the second quarter, Moroney assisted Aaron Mathias (Ridgefield ,Conn.) for a score that came from the top of the box to make it a 6-3 game.

But Thomas Woessner (Old Lyme, Conn.) answered with a goal from the left side of the box for the Camels with 1:53 remaining to make it a 6-4 game at the break. 

Amherst scored 1:59 into the third quarter when Ryan Cassidy found the back of the net.

However, Connecticut College countered by scoring the next two goals in a 61 second span. Ross Thompson (Carmel, N.Y.) assisted Hegarty for a score with 9:52 remaining. Then, with 8:51 to go, Hartgers made a pass from the right side over the middle to Hegarty, and the junior attackman scored his 25th goal of the season from point blank range to pull the Camels to within 7-6 

Amherst responded though and after Haffey scored with 2:35 left, Acton closed out the quarter when he rifled one home from left side with nine seconds left that provided the visitors with a 9-6 advantage after three quarters of action.

Amherst took control in the fourth. Moroney made a nice feed to Dylan Park (Charlottesville, Va.) who  one-timed one home for a score with 12:12 remaining to make it a 10-6 game. 

The visitors continued to pull away en route to the 17-6 victory.

Amherst held a 35-to-25 advantage in shots while carrying a 32-to-29 advantage in ground balls.
