Box Score MIDDLEBURY, Vermont – Bowdoin advanced to the NESCAC Championship match with a 2-0 victory over Connecticut College on Saturday afternoon at Middlebury. The sixth-seeded Polar Bears (9-3-4) will play eighth-seeded Wesleyan, who advanced 5-4 on penalty kicks over second-seeded Middlebury. The Camels fell to 10-5-2.
Scoring chances were few and far between in the match, as the Polar Bears took advantage of a pair of early opportunities. In the 12th minute, Kiefer Solarte raced up the right side of the pitch and crossed a ball to the far post that found the feet of Hunter Miller, who tapped it in for a 1-0 lead at 11:08.
A majority of the play occurred in the midfield over the ensuing 12 minutes. Following a Camel foul, Bowdoin's Cedric Charlier headed in a ball on a set piece on a service by Matty McColl from the right 35 yards away.
Connecticut College nearly sliced the lead in half in the 31st minute, but a shot from straight on by Pat Devlin was stopped by Bowdoin goalkeeper Stevie Van Siclen on a save to his right. The game remained a two-goal Polar Bear lead headed into the halftime break.
Following the intermission, the Camels had a pair of quality scoring chances. Mark Leon rifled a shot in the 52nd minute that Van Siclen thwarted with a save to his left from 25 yards out. In the 62nd minute, Connecticut College's Matthew Bitchell collected a through ball in front of the Bowdoin goal, but his shot sailed wide.
Bowdoin looked to ice the victory and keep possession, while the Camels kept the offensive pressure up, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Connecticut College finished the match with a 7-4 advantage in shots, while Bowdoin possessed a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Van Siclen was credited with four saves for the Polar Bears, while Austin Dacunha turned away a pair of stops.
