MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (April 22) - In the final game of the year for both squads, Wesleyan rattled off nine unanswered goals during a span of 13:34 in the first half to take a 9-1 lead over visiting Conn. College and go on for a 15-7 women's lacrosse victory here today.
Wesleyan got two goals and three assists from sophomore Liana Mathias and four goals each from sophomore Abby Wheeler and junior Martha Harding to pace the Cardinal attack. Mathias' first goal of the game at 21:05 off a pass from the middle to the left side by sophomore Rachel Aronow, who had made an interception of a Camel pass near midfield, gave Wesleyan the lead for good, 2-1. Goals by Aronow, who had two goals and two helpers in the contest, Mathias and a natural hat trick by Wheeler in a span of just 3:47, spotted Wesleyan a 7-1 lead with 10:09 to go before halftime. Two goals from Harding finished off the Cardinals' nine-goal burst.
The Camels ended the half with three goals, two of them by top scorer senior Taylor Thomas, who finished the game with three goals, giving her 28 goals and five assists for 33 points on the season. Sophomore Hannah Donegan added two markers for the Camels, upping her point total to 27.
Wesleyan got the opening goal of the second half 3:30 into the period from Aronow for a 10-4 edge. The Camels got no closer than five goals in the second half as the Cardinals maintained a comfortable margin throughout the period.
Mathias closed out the year with 33 points on 21 goals and 12 assist to lead Wesleyan in scoring.
Wheeler entered the game with just four points on two goals and two assist. She doubled her point total for the year with her four tallies. Harding finished with 13 goals and four assists while Aronow had 15 goals and two assists.
Wesleyan outshot Connecticut College, 29-21, as Cardinal junior keeper Nina Labovich posted 10 saves. Freshman Meg Raskin played the first half for Conn, making five saves while yielding nine goals. Freshman Megan Fahey then played the opening 11:35 of the second period, allowing one goal with one save. Raskin returned to net for the final 18:25, adding one save with five goals against.
