Connecticut College 10, ECSU 3 Hale & Cornbrooks Lead Camels Past Warriors

NEW LONDON, Conn.—Junior co-captain Lacey Hale (Winchester, Mass.) scored three goals in the opening half while sophomore Annie Cornbrooks (Wilton, Conn.) netted a goal and assisted on four others in leading the Connecticut College women's lacrosse team to its second straight win in a 10-3 triumph against Eastern Connecticut State University here today.

The Camels evened their mark at 2-2 on the spring while the Warriors fell to 2-4 with the setback.

Junior Tina Balzotti (Duxbury, Mass.) chipped in with her team leading eighth and ninth goals of the year for the winning side. Classmate Hannah Donegan (Great Falls, Va.) sandwiched a goal around two helpers, adding four ground balls and two draw controls. Sophomore Madison Barker (pictured by Anika Goodhue, Boston, Mass.) finished with a game-best eight draw controls to go with her free position goal and two ground balls.

Junior defender Blaire Rose (Setauket, N.Y.) finished with four caused turnovers and a ground ball to lead the Camels on the defensive side of the ball.

Sophomore All-American Meg Raskin (Westwood, Mass.) made seven saves in the cage to earn the win.

Eastern Connecticut State junior midfielder Paige Schneider (East Lyme, Conn.) accounted for all of her team's offense, finishing with a hat-trick in the loss. She leads the Warriors with 16 goals scored this season. Junior midfielder Devyne Doran (South Kingstown, R.I.), the reigning Little East Defensive Player of the Week, had five ground balls, four caused turnovers and two draw controls in the loss.

Junior net-minder Taylor Emmerson (Colchester, Conn.) made three saves in 45:22 of action. Jessica Purick (Riverhead, N.Y.) stopped two shots in 14:38 of relief duty.

The Camels won the opening draw and took the lead for good just 25 seconds into regulation when Donegan assisted Balzotti for a goal. Later on in the half, the Camels opened up a 4-1 cushion when Barker buried a free position for the hosts. But Schneider answered back, executing on a nifty looking spin move to make it a 4-2 game with 16:44 to go. But Hale scored the next two goals to complete the first half trifecta, netting goals 1:18 apart.

Then, the Camels scored their seventh goal with 7:39 left in the first stanza to cap their first half rally. Senior co-captain Lauren Munhall (Ridgewood, N.J.) induced a Warrior turnover and senior Maggie Hogan (Arnold, Md.) corralled the ground ball. Rookie midfielder Jamie Navoni (Natick, Mass.) sprinted into the Warrior defensive zone for the successful clear and connected with Cornbrooks, who was fouled. Cornbrooks buried the free position shot to close out the first half scoring and the Camels carried a 7-2 advantage into the break.

Donegan opened the second scoring with a free position goal to put the Camels on top 8-2. Then, with 23:51 to go, Raskin made a terrific stop on Doran's scoring bid for the Camels. Schneider pulled the Warriors to within 8-3 with her third goal of the contest with 22:45 to play.

Purick made a great save of her own on Balzotti's shot from point blank with 17:10 remaining for the visitors.

But the Camels added two more insurance goals coming 1:06 apart to pull away. Noelle Gauthier (Avon, Conn.) netted the ninth goal and Balzotti closed out the scoring with 7:01 to remaining in regulation. Cornbrooks was the facilitator on both scores.

The hosts held the Warriors off the scoreboard the rest of the way and were easily able to hang on for the 10-3 win.
