#7 Trinity College 12, Connecticut College 6 Hale Contributes Two Goals & One Assist for Camels

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. – Senior co-captain midfielder Martha Griffin (Exeter, N.H.) scored five goals, caused three turnovers, and won three draw controls to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 12-6 victory over the visiting Connecticut College Camels in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's lacrosse action this evening on Sheppard Field.  Trinity, ranked No. 7 in the nation, improves to 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the NESCAC with its second win in a row, while the Camels drops to 5-5 overall and 1-4 in the league with their first loss in three games.

Trinity used a 5-0 run over a 10:31 span in the second half to turn a break open a 7-5 game.  Griffin and fellow senior Abby Hughes (Wenham, Mass.) scored twice during the Trinity spurt and sophomore attacker Kiley Coffey (West Newbury, Mass.) netted one of her two goals to put the Bantams ahead, 12-5, with just under a minute remaining.  Senior attacker Cassidy Lynch (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) and sophomore defender Caitlin Mahoney (Wellesley, Mass.) had pulled the Camels to within two goals at 7-5 with 19:35 on the clock before the run, and Connecticut College sophomore Anna Jorgensen (Ridgewood, N.J.) added a late goal to account for the 12-6 final score.

The visitors opened the scoring when Lynch fed junior attacker Lacey Hale (Winchester, Mass.) from behind the net 2:58 into the game.  Griffin quickly answered by winning the ensuing draw and beating Camel sophomore backstop Meg Raskin (Westwood, Mass.) for the first Trinity goal 44 seconds later.  After an 11-plus minute scoring drought that saw Raskin and Trinity sophomore goalie Zoe Ferguson (Ridgewood, N.J.) each make two saves, Griffin scored on a highlight-reel, back-handed flip with 16:27 remaining in the first period and completed a first-half hat trick with another goal exactly eight minutes later.  The teams traded goals in the final 10 minutes before intermission and Trinity built on its 4-2 halftime lead when sophomore attacker Abby McInerney (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) scored 3:27 into the second stanza and assisted junior attacker Clare Lyne (Concord, Mass.) on goal three minutes after that.  Hale scored for Connecticut College with 20:09 on the clock, but Coffey won the draw and answered with a marker to put Trinity ahead, 7-4, 1:05 later.

Trinity finished with a 33-to-11 shooting edge, won 14 of 20 draw controls including a game-high eight by Coffey, and forced 12 turnovers while committing just five, but Raskin kept the Camels within striking distance by making 15 saves.  Lyne joined Coffey and Hughes as a two-goal scorer and added a pair of ground balls, while senior co-captain Ashley Stewart (Dover, Mass.) had three caused turnovers.  Ferguson improved to 5-1 in goal with three first-half saves before yielding to senior Emily Mooney (New York, N.Y.) who caused two turnovers and saved one shot.  Hale finished with two goals and one assist, while Lynch and junior attacker Tina Balzotti (Duxbury, Mass.) recorded a goal and an assist apiece for the Camel offense, while Connecticut College senior Maggie Hogan (Arnold, Md.) added a game-high three ground balls.
