Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Clara Bisson (Sudbury, Mass.) and sophomore Kelly Wolin (Sudbury, Mass.) combined for eight goals in leading the Connecticut College women's lacrosse team to a convincing 17-9 victory over Coast Guard in its season opener on Saturday afternoon.
Connecticut College (1-0) blasted out to a 5-0 advantage over the first 15 minutes with all of the goals coming off the sticks of Bisson and Wolin. Maddie Rizzuto put the Bears on the board with 11:29 to play, but the Camels responded with three more tallies by most notably having freshman Emily Yorns (Longmeadow, Mass.) net her first two goals as a collegian. Yorns and Bisson each completed hat tricks in the waning minutes of the first half, and the Camels carried a commanding 11-2 advantage into recess.
The hosts attempted to rally by scoring the first three goals of the second half in less than 10 minutes to make it 11-5. However, junior Hannah Lombard (Ipswich, Mass.) converted a free position shot to begin a streak of four unanswered by the Camels. Wolin extended the margin to twin figures by finishing a pass from Bisson at 13:36, providing more than enough insurance for the team to capture the win.
In addition to scoring four goals, Bisson filled the stat sheet with a game-high seven draw controls and three assists. Wolin picked up two ground balls, and Yorns won three draws while also finishing with a hat trick offensively. Junior Nina Fazio (East Longmeadow, Mass.) only had to make five saves to pick up the victory between the posts.
Coast Guard (2-1) was led by Rizzuto, who tallied a hat trick and dished out an assist. Etta Davis and Haley Howard each scored twice while scooping up a game-high five ground balls and winning a team-best four draws, respectively. Goalie Mary Budri was charged with the loss after making six saves and surrendering eight goals in less than 24 minutes of action.
Connecticut College will next face Keene State for its home opener at Silfen Field on Wednesday, March 4 at 5 p.m.
