Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Senior Clara Bisson (Sudbury, Mass.) factored into six goals and two additional players netted a hat trick in leading the Connecticut College women's lacrosse team to a 14-5 victory over the United States Merchant Marine Academy at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
USMMA (0-1) quickly got on the board first when Jaqui Sheedy found Jenna Turrentine at 27:46, but the Camels rattled off 11 straight to take a 10-goal lead into the recess. Sophomore Kelly Wolin (Sudbury, Mass.) netted an unassisted marker at 19:44 before Bisson and junior Hannah Lombard (Ipswich, Mass.) converted free position opportunities to ignite the Camel offense.
The Mariners tried to close the gap by scoring the first two goals of the second half, as Turrentine and Angela Parker beat junior Nina Fazio (East Longmeadow, Mass.) with shot attempts at 27:37 and 23:50. However, that was as close as the Camels' opponent would come. Despite competing a player down, Wolin finished a pass from freshman Emily Yorns (Longmeadow, Mass.) with 19:21 left to help keep the Mariners at bay for the remainder of the contest.
Bisson scored two goals and added four assists to lead the way for Connecticut College, which had a 13-8 advantage in draw controls and a 28-26 edge in ground balls. She also won four draws. Lombard and Wolin each netted a hat trick, while Wolin also picked up four ground balls. Yorns matched a team high with four draw controls, and senior Erica Hesser (Rye, N.H.) had a strong game defensively with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Fazio made four saves to pick up the win between the posts.
USMMA was paced by Turrentine, who finished the game with three goals, four ground balls, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers. Maddie Schmidt registered a game-high seven caused turnovers to go along with four ground balls, and Chelsea Chamberlain picked up five ground balls in addition to causing a turnover. Goalie Jessica Gamsjager stopped four shots in the losing effort.
Connecticut College (3-1) will conclude its 2020 campaign at home when it hosts Hamilton on Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. The program is also planning to recognize its seven seniors prior to the contest.
