Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Emily Yorns (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored four times and junior Hannah Lombard (Ipswich, Mass.) factored into five goals in leading the Connecticut College women's lacrosse team to a 12-6 win over Keene State in its home opener on Wednesday evening.
The Camels scored the first four goals of the game with Lombard pacing the offense and led from wire-to-wire. After Kate Bermingham opened the scoring at 27:09, Lombard had a hand in three straight markers over a span of 3:50. She doubled the margin by converting a free position, set up senior Clara Bisson (Sudbury, Mass.), and then finished a pass from senior Julia Loesch (Charlotte, N.C.). Yorns became the fifth Camel to score when freshman Abigail Gleeson-Feldman (Nanuet, N.Y.) found her in transition, and the hosts carried a 6-3 advantage into the recess.
Keene State attempted to get back in the game by tallying the first goal of the second half when Tess Masci fired the ball in at 27:26 to make it a two-goal game, but that was as close as the Owls would come. The Camels most notably capitalized three more times on free position attempts before eventually coming away with the six-goal victory.
In addition to scoring four times, Yorns won five draws to lead the way for Connecticut College, which outshot the Owls by a 34-22 margin and also had a 21-17 advantage in ground balls. Lombard finished with two goals and three assists, while Bisson matched a team high with five draws. Gleeson-Feldman caused three turnovers and picked up three ground balls, and junor Nina Fazio (East Longmeadow, Mass.) turned away 12 shots between the pipes.
Keene State (0-2) was paced by Haile Ratajack on both sides of the ball in the losing effort. She finished with three goals, three ground balls, and three caused turnovers. Brigid Casey won four draws, and Masci scooped up four ground balls. Rebecca Koziara suffered the loss despite making 14 saves.
