NEW LONDON, Conn.--Sophomore Kelsie Fralick (West Chester, Pa.) made 29 saves to lead the Connecticut College women's hockey team to a 2-0 victory against Colby College in a NESCAC game played at Dayton Arena Friday night.
The Camels improve their record to 5-6-1 and are 2-4-1 in conference play. The Mules slip to 4-8 and are 0-7 in the NESCAC.
Justina Germano (Westwood, Mass.) scored a first period goal and Ariel DiPasquale (Whitestone, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist for the winning side.
Brianne Wheeler (Brussels, Ontario) finished with 30 saves for Colby.
The Camels vaulted out to a 1-0 lead at the 3:17 mark of the opening period. Leigh Getz (Clifton Park, N.Y.) unloaded from the right point with a shot and DiPasquale re-directed it to Germano, who tipped it in for what proved to be the difference in the contest.
In the middle period, Colby pressured the Camels and Fralick, holding an 11-to-3 advantage in shots. Junior forward Samantha Slotnick (Canterbury, Conn.) may have had the best chance of the night for the Mules when her shot caught the top of the crossbar with 10:35 remaining. But a key blocked shot by Samantha Shuffenecker (Oswego, N.Y.) and a nifty looking breakup by Getz that thwarted a 2-on-1 break allowed the hosts to get to the second intermission with the lead intact.
In the third period, the Camels seemed to regain their edge and out-shot the Mules 15-to-10 in the frame. With 4:25 remaining, DiPasquale skated in from the right circle and lifted a wrist shot into the top shelf of the netting for a critical insurance goal, her team leading fifth score of the season, to make it a 2-0 game.
Colby emptied their net with 1:18 to go but Fralick was able to keep the barn door shut and the Camels prevailed with the 2-0 triumph.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow for a 3:00 p.m. game in New London.
