NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Connecticut College men's tennis team coasted to a 6-3 victory against the Coast Guard in the latest meeting of the Route 32 rivals hosted by the Coast Guard Academy Sunday here in the Whaling City.
The Camels improved their record to 5-9 with the triumph. The Bears fell to 6-8 with the setback.
Connecticut College senior Daniel Maffa (Lexington, Mass.) and sophomore Will Cannon (Fairfield, Conn.) joined forces to take an 8-2 decision in the first doubles match up for the visitors. Junior Ben Sachs (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) and sophomore Charlie Williams (Mercer Island, Wash.) chipped in with a 9-7 triumph at second doubles for the Camels. At third doubles, sophomore Johnny Cissel (Amherst, N.H.) and Patrick Farrell (Smithtown, N.Y.) secured an 8-4 victory for Connecticut College.
Sachs recorded a 6-0, 6-0 straight set victory for the Camels at fourth singles. Sophomore Scott Brown (Old Greenwich, Conn.) won a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 decision for the Camels at five. In the sixth slot in the line up, junior captain Patrick Farrell (Smithtown, N.Y.) battled back to take a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 win for Connecticut College.
Coast Guard sophomore Tom Hackett (Corpus Christi, Texas) posted a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory to lead the hosts at number one singles. Junior John Hu (Plainsboro, N.J.) checked in with 5-7, 7-6, 6-3 triumph at second singles for the Bears. At third singles, Coast Guard junior Mike Melampy (Duxbury, Mass.) recorded a 6-3, 7-6 victory for the Bears.
