Colby Deals Field Hockey Tough 1-0 Loss; McGraw Makes Five Saves

Box Score

WATERVILLE, Maine – Colby scored an early goal in the first half and held on to defeat the Connecticut College field hockey team by a 1-0 score in NESCAC action on Sunday afternoon at Bill Alfond Field.

Georgia Cassidy caged the only marker of the game in the 13th minute of action. The sophomore transfer from North Carolina stole the ball from the Camel defense and got a friendly bounce when she fired a shot from the top of the circle past Camel goalkeeper Andi McGraw (Sheffield, Mass.).

Connecticut College attempted to tie the game before halftime by earning two straight penalty corners. Junior Lauren Hirshom (Walpole, Mass.) took a shot shortly after the second corner, but her attempt was saved by Riley Whitmyer. Senior Jacqueline Murphy (Danvers, Mass.) also unleashed a shot off a penalty corner that went wide in the waning minutes, and the teams headed to the break with the hosts ahead by a 1-0 score.

The Camels continued to find opportunities to score the equalizer throughout the second half. However, the team was unable to capitalize despite earning two penalty corners and attempting two more shots against Whitmyer before eventually settling for the one-goal defeat.

Whitmyer made three saves to pick up the victory for Colby (2-2, NESCAC 1-2), while McGraw turned away five shots for the Camels in the setback.

Connecticut College (1-4, NESCAC 0-3) will regroup and return to action when it hosts Roger Williams on Thursday, Sept. 21 at 6:00 p.m.
