Box Score MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Freshman Camille Phelan (Medfield, Mass.) netted an equalizing goal and set up a game-winning tally as the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team rallied to defeat Wesleyan, 3-1, on Friday evening at Spurrier-Snyder Rink.
Wesleyan scored the first goal of the game on the power play at the 17:26 mark of the first period by having the puck bounce its way. Maggie Curran took a short pass back from Allie Damren at the left point and fired in a shot that deflected off a Camel skater before finding its way into the net with the goalie caught off guard.
Shortly after the Cardinals killed off their first penalty of the game in the second period, the Camels drew even by capitalizing on a second-chance opportunity. Phelan centered a pass to senior Sammi Estes (Millis, Mass.) for a point-blank shot from the slot that was saved near the end of power play, but freshman Melanie Conca (Nutley, N.J.) collected the puck behind the net to keep the possession alive with the teams transitioning to even strength. Senior Ellie Branka (Medfield, Mass.) then sent in a shot from center ice near the blue line that deflected off Conca before finding Phelan, who buried the puck inside the near left post to tie the game midway through the frame.
The Camels seized the momentum from there, adding two more goals while outshooting the hosts by a 15-0 margin during the third and final frame after holding a commanding 15-7 shot advantage in the second period. Phelan dished the puck from the left of the goal to Estes for the eventual game-winning marker with 5:24 remaining, and junior Erin Dillon (Hazlet, N.J.) added an insurance marker on a breakaway just 34 seconds later.
Sophomore Carly Denora (Verona, N.J.) picked up the victory by making 13 saves for the Camels, while Allegra Grant made 31 stops at the other end for Wesleyan in the losing effort.
Connecticut College (10-5-1, NESCAC 4-4-1) and Wesleyan (6-8-1, NESCAC 0-6-1) will conclude a weekend series at Dayton Arena tomorrow evening at 7 p.m.
