Women's Ice Hockey Plays Williams to a 1-1 Tie

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Carly Denora (Verona, N.J.) stopped 32 shots and senior Kylie Wilkes (Howell, N.J.) found the back of the net as the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team played Williams to a 1-1 tie on Friday evening at Dayton Arena.

The teams played an evenly matched and scoreless first period which saw the Ephs hold a slim 8-7 advantage in shots on target. Junior Erin Dillon (Hazlet, N.J.) had a good look in the second minute, but her shot attempt missed to the left. Williams blocked six shots defensively, and the teams headed to the first intermission scoreless at 0-0.

Williams nearly got on the scoreboard first at the 5:25 mark of the second period, beginning when Amanda Reisman poke checked the puck away from a Camel defender in the Ephs' defensive zone and sent it up to Amanda Reisman in transition. Reisman dumped the puck in from behind the blue line before making a line change, and it unexpectedly clinked off the right pipe before being cleared away from trouble.

After dodging a bullet earlier, the Camels were able to open the scoring when they went on their second power play of the evening late in the frame. Wilkes won a faceoff from the left side before receiving the puck back and finishing a give-and-go play with sophomore defender Kaaren Liston (Houghton, Mich.) from behind the left dot to make it 1-0 at 17:31.

The lead, however, did not last long as Williams (9-5-4, NESCAC 6-3-2) had a quick answer in the opening minutes of the third. CC Wallin won a puck along the right boards near the Eph bench and dished it to Michaela O'Connor, who centered a pass that was finished by Gabi Montembeault by weaving herself through the Camel defense and finishing with a shot to the upper right corner of the net with exactly 17 minutes left to play.

Despite surrendering the equalizer, Denora did everything she could to keep Connecticut College in the game by making 16 saves in the third period. The Camels also gained a power play with less than two minutes remaining, but they were unable to get the puck past Eph netminder Chloe Heiting.

The Camels were unable to capitalize on another power play in the extra session, but they did make one last rush in the final minute which began with a 2-on-1 opportunity. Dillon came storming down the right side and was initially cut off by defender Brynn Puppe. She switched gears behind the net and maintained possession, but her backdoor wraparound was denied by Heiting. The referee blew the play dead with a dogpile of players from both teams in front of the net looking for the puck, and the evenly-matched programs eventually settled for a 1-1 tie.

Denora made 32 saves in the game for Connecticut College, while Williams' Heiting turned away 26 shots.

Connecticut College (11-5-2, NESCAC 5-4-2) and Williams will wrap up a weekend series tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. in what will also be the Camels' 5th Annual Autism Awareness Game.
