Women's Ice Hockey Downs Williams With Last-Minute Overtime Goal

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Sammi Estes (Millis, Mass.) netted her sixth goal of the season with 40 seconds remaining in overtime to propel the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Williams on Saturday afternoon at Dayton Arena.

Connecticut College opened the scoring at the midway point of the first period. Senior Kylie Wilkes (Howell, N.J.) won the puck in the back corner behind the right side of the goal and sent a pass along the back of the boards to junior Erin Dillon (Hazlet, N.J.), who found sophomore Natalie Witkowski (Cheshire, Conn.) for a quick strike just in front of the crease at 9:55. The Camels outshot the Ephs, 8-3, in the opening frame carried a 1-0 advantage into the intermission.

The Ephs, however, came out firing and outshot the hosts by a 30-9 margin over the remaining 40 minutes of regulation to help themselves eventually pull even. After a Camel was called off the ice for checking from behind at the tail end of a physical second frame which featured more than 20 minutes of penalties, the visitors were able to pull even early in the third. With the Camels in the final minute of killing off a major, Brynn Puppe fired a slapshot from the blue line that was stopped by freshman Abby Wieczorek. Amanda Reisman then collected the rebound and found Gabbi Montembault in the slot for her second goal of the weekend.

Despite getting outshot by a 14-3 margin in the third period, Connecticut College was able to force overtime by getting 13 saves from Wieczorek, including three in a late two-minute span while the Ephs were on their sixth power play of the game, to eventually decide things in overtime. Witkowski got a good look in the final seconds after senior Ellie Branka (Medfield, Mass.) blocked a shot at the other end, but Chloe Heiting turned it away to send the teams to overtime for the second straight day.

Both teams came out aggressive in the extra period by combining for four total shot attempts in the opening minutes. Dillon had a breakaway look at what could have been the golden goal just a minute into the frame, but Heiting came through again for Williams (9-6-4, NESCAC 6-4-2) to keep the game tied. The Camels continued to forecheck throughout the overtime session, as junior Mairi Anthony (Stoneham, Mass.) stole the puck away and rifled a shot that was blocked by Brianna Hill.

Following a dump to help create a line change, the Camels were able to get one past Heiting by remaining aggressive against the Eph defenders. Freshman Caroline O'Keefe (Winthrop, Mass.) stole the puck away from Mia Carroll along the right boards and chipped it to Estes, who drove in from the right side and beat Heiting with a shot to the upper 90 of the net.

Wieczorek picked up her first victory over a NESCAC opponent by making 33 saves for Connecticut College, while Heiting turned away 17 shots for Williams in the setback.

Connecticut College (12-5-2, NESCAC 6-4-2) will next travel to face UMass Boston for its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
