Women's Ice Hockey Ties Colby, 3-3, on Senior Day

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team played Colby to a 3-3 overtime tie on Saturday afternoon at Dayton Arena.

The game was deadlocked at 2-2 through two periods and remained that way through most of the third until there was a wild finish to conclude regulation. After going on the only power play of the third period, the Camels were able to seize the lead in thrilling fashion when senior Sammi Estes (Millis, Mass.) redirected an initial blast by freshman Melanie Conca (Nutley, N.J.) from the right circle. Sophomore Kaaren Liston (Houghton, Mich.), who passed the puck to Conca from the team's defensive zone in transition, was also credited with an assist on the play.

Colby (13-5-4, NESCAC 8-3-3), however, was able to net the equalizer with 40.4 seconds remaining to force overtime after pulling its goalie. Lauren Klein fired a shot from along the right boards through traffic with the Mules playing with an extra skater, finishing a pass from Tess Dupre.

Playing with momentum, the Mules arguably had the best chance to win it in overtime when they went on a power play due to a Camel being called off for interference for making contact with visiting goalie Cierra San Roman. However, freshman netminder Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.) was able to make a key save on a high percentage shot by Lexi Cafiero, and the Camels were eventually able to clear the puck away.

After recognizing its nine-member senior class with a pregame ceremony, Connecticut College scored twice in the first period to grab an early lead. Sophomore Samantha Hunt (Savage, Minn.) stopped a puck on a Mule clear attempt and rifled in a shot from the high slot through traffic to open the scoring at 4:13 for her first collegiate tally, and junior Erin Dillon (Hazlet, N.J.) followed with a power play marker 10 minutes later. Senior Kylie Wilkes (Howell, N.J.) wristed a high shot that was stopped by San Roman, and Dillon, who initially sent a pass back to the forward, potted the rebound.

The Mules, however, rallied from two goals down by finding the back of the net twice in a span of 41 seconds. Cafiero sliced the margin at half with the visitors on the power play in tic-tac-toe fashion. Bri Michaud-Nolan found Dupre, who sent the puck into Cafiero for a quick touch that stayed inside the near left post at 8:53. Tate Senden then finished a feed along the right endline from Stephanie Lane to even the score. Colby then came from behind again in the third period to quickly knot things up and end the weekend by going unbeaten to end the weekend in a tie for second place in the standings.

San Roman made 27 saves for Colby, while Camel goalie Wieczorek stopped 21 shots at the other end.

Connecticut College (13-6-3, NESCAC 6-5-3), which has already qualified for the NESCAC Tournament, will wrap up the regular season with a two-game series at Hamilton next weekend. The teams will first face off on Friday evening at 7 p.m.
