Box Score CLINTON, N.Y. – Freshman Camille Phelan (Medfield, Mass.) and senior Ashley Carbone (Old Saybrook, Conn.) each lit the lamp with less than two minutes remaining in regulation to help the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team salvage a 2-2 tie with Hamilton on Sunday afternoon.
With their backs against the wall and trailing 2-0 in the final minutes, Connecticut College (13-7-4, NESCAC 6-6-4) pulled sophomore Carly Denora (Verona, N.J.) mulitple times and it paid off. The Camels first slashed the margin in half on a power play opportunity when Phelan found the back of the net with 1:47 remaining while the teams were playing six-on-four. Shortly afterwards, Denora headed to the bench again, and Carbone was able to poke the puck through a scrum of players in front of the net to tie the game with 33 seconds remaining to salvage the eventual tie.
Despite outshooting the Camels by a 10-2 margin in the opening period, Hamilton (15-8-1, NESCAC 9-6-1) had nothing to show for it. Allie Curry, however, finally broke the tie in the second period by burying a shot banked off the boards from Kate Piacenza at 15:38. Michaela Giuttari doubled the lead by scoring a power play goal at the 12:13 mark of the third period, but the visitors battled back to knot the score and end the weekend with some momentum moving forward.
Denora made 23 saves between the pipes for Connecticut College, while Hamilton's Sidney Molnar stopped 13 shots.
Following the draw, the Camels concluded the regular season in sixth place and will begin postseason action in the NESCAC Tournament on the road against third-seeded Amherst on Saturday, Feb. 29 at a time to be determined.
