Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Natalie Witkowski (Cheshire, Conn.) registered a shorthanded goal which would stand as the game-winning marker and also tallied an assist to propel the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team to a 4-1 victory over UMass Boston on Tuesday evening.
All five markers in the game were scored during special teams situations, which included three power play goals and two shorthanded tallies. Senior Lauren Helm (Frisco, Texas) put the Camels on the board at the 12:48 mark of the first during a power play situation before Witkowski doubled the margin at the 6:03 mark of the second on an unassisted play while her team was playing shorthanded. Freshman Camille Phelan (Medfield, Mass.) added an insurance marker on a power play with just 10 seconds remaining in the second period to give the visitors a 3-0 advantage.
The Beacons were able to get on the board with a shorthanded goal of their own at 7:50 in the third on a strike by Katie Leffler, but that was as close as they would come. Less than six minutes later, senior Sammi Estes (Millis, Mass.) had an answer at the other end of the ice to produce the final outcome.
Freshman Abbie Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.) picked up the win for Connecticut College by making seven saves through the first two periods before classmate MJ Peters (El Grenada, Calif.) relieved her in the third and stopped five shots. Caty Flagg suffered the loss for UMass Boston (11-9-2) despite making 39 saves.
Connecticut College (13-5-2) will have the upcoming weekend off and resume action when it hosts Colby for a pivotal two-game weekend series beginning on Friday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. in Dayton Arena.
