Adam Fitzgerald ‘03 was a leader and groundbreaker for the cross country and track & field programs. The centerpiece of the greatest cross country team in program history, Fitzgerald was the top scorer for Head Coach Jim Butler’s 2002 Men’s Cross Country Team that placed fourth at the NCAA Regional Championship.

The Camels made history with their 20th place finish at the NCAA Championship. It was the first cross county team to crack the nation’s top 20 and jus the fifth men’s program at Connecticut College to receive an invitation to an NCAA Championship.

In 2003, Fitzgerald returned to the program as a graduate student. In November of that year, Fitzgerald joined Athletic Hall of Famer Dave Litoff ‘83 as the College’s second All-American in men’s cross country when he placed 25th at the national championship. On the cross country trails, he was honored as an All-New England performer and as a First-Team All-NESCAC runner in 2002 and 2003.

Fitzgerald earned numerous honors for his dominance in distance running in both indoor and outdoor track & field. In the 10,000 meter run, Fitzgerald posted a school record time of 30:53.77 to win the 2003 All-New England (D. 1, 2, & 3) Championship. Fitzgerald also captured the 10k crown at the 2002 New England Division III Championship and the 2003 NESCAC Championship.

Fitzgerald continued to support his alma-mater after graduation by serving as a volunteer assistant coach for cross country and track & field between 2004 and 2010.

He has competed in numerous marathons, conquering the grueling Boston Marathon course for four consecutive years from 2007-2010. At the 2009 Chicago Marathon, Fitzgerald finished in the top 1% of the field, setting a personal record of 2:25.30 while crossing the line as the 35th American finisher.

A Dean’s List Student, Fitzgerald earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history.
