A two-time NCAA All-American and a six-time NCAA All-America Honorable Mention selection, Sarah Murphy Knortz ’11, who excelled in the butterfly, is one of the most accomplished swimmers in the history of the institution. She garnered All-America laurels by placing third in the 200 butterfly and seventh as a member of the 200 free relay at the 2011 NCAA Championships after leading the team to a fourth-place finish and its highest point total in school history to date at the 2011 NESCAC Championships. That year, Murphy was also the individual NESCAC champion in the 200 butterfly event at the championship meet. Murphy, who was a nine-time All-NESCAC honoree in her career, also excelled in the classroom and was recognized as an Academic All-America® Third Team selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The team captain and recipient of the school’s prestigious Anita L. DeFrantz Award held 10 school records at the time of her graduation, and her mark in the 200 butterfly event still stands nearly a decade later. Murphy graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in sociology-based human relations and a certificate from the Holleran Center’s Program in Community Action and Public Policy. Murphy has since earned a master’s degree in Education as well as a certificate degree of advanced graduate study in Counseling from Harvard University. With her postgraduate degrees and practicum counseling work through the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Murphy earned licensure from the Massachusetts Department of Education as a School Social Worker/ Adjustment Counselor. She has competed in charity “century rides” (100-mile bike rides), triathlons, half marathons, and the Philadelphia Marathon in her free time and currently works as a school counselor at The Rivers School in Weston, Massachusetts.
