Born in Baltimore, Frances Homer graduated from Friends School in 1938 and Connecticut College in 1942. A fantastic all-around athlete, she participated in field hockey, swimming, tennis, basketball, and figure skating. However, she excelled most in field hockey, where she became the first eighth grader to earn a varsity spot at Friends School.

While attending Connecticut College, Homer participated in various intercollegiate field hockey scrimmages labeled “Play Days”—where representatives from different colleges had the opportunity to meet on the field—throughout her four years. She was also elected president of the Athletic Association in spring 1941 and was considered the “backbone” of the organization in her senior year.

Following her graduation from Conn, Homer taught field hockey for two years at the Dwight Englewood School in New Jersey before accepting a similar position with Friends School in 1948. She was the varsity field hockey coach there from 1951 until her retirement in 1969.

Homer was a past president of the Southeast Field Hockey Association and treasurer of the U.S. Field Hockey Association from 1967 to 1975. She was inducted into the USA Field Hockey Hall of Fame as an honorary member in 1963. She passed away in November 1983.
