Charles Luce was Connecticut College’s first Director of Physical Education and Athletics. Luce inherited the dual role of Director of Athletics and head coach of men’s basketball. He removed himself from coaching after the 1978-79 season to focus on the duties of being Director of Athletics.

One of Luce’s proudest accomplishments came in 1982 when the Camels joined the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Luca was also instrumental in the planning and completion of all athletic facilities at Connecticut College including the Charles B. Luce Field House which was dedicated in his honor in 1992.
