Michael Moccia '89 left his mark on the Connecticut College men’s hockey program as the the most prolific player in program history.

Moccia holds the school record in all three major offensive categories with 78 goals, 143 assists and 221 points. He was named to the Easter College Athletic Conference (ECAC) South All-Star team three times and earned several ECAC South Player of the Week Honors.

Playing under the direction of longtime Head Coach Doug Roberts, Moccia’s teams posted a record of 65-23-2 (.733) during his four years on the ice, advancing to the ECAC South Region Semifinals for three consecutive years. In his freshman year, Moccia helped lead the Camels to the ECAC South Finals with a record of 16-6.

Moccia’s impact on these teams established a new standard of competitive success for the program leading to the invitation to join the more competitive ECAC East in 1990-91.

Moccia remains ranked in numerous NCAA categories for his dominance. His 10 points in a 1985 victory against Skidmore still ranks third on the NCAA All-Time leader list. He is ranked ninth in NCAA point production with 2.38 points per game and his 143 assists is the 11th highest total in NCAA history.

Moccia collected a point in 54 consecutive games, setting an amazing school record that exemplified his consistency and commitment to excellence. His production and commitment on the ice raised the bar and established the gold standard for all other Camels to follow.

In the classroom, Moccia carried a double major in history and government. A dedicated member of the hockey community in the Chicago Area, Moccia has been coaching at various levels for the past 20 years. He served as the Head Coach of Lake Forest High School from 2002-2007 and has been coaching youth hockey for the past seven years.

Moccia has been a caring contributor to those in need. Since 1991, he has volunteered his time for A Safe Place, a battered women’s shelter in the Chicago area. The organization assists in coordinating a holiday party while also providing gifts and relief for battered women and their children. A Safe Place assists with moving and medical expenses for the victims and their families.

Moccia has been married to his wife Sharon for the past 23 years. The couple has three children: Brandon, Brittany and Brett.
