Susan Mabrey Gaud’s '68 versatility and dominance in the athletic arena put her in a class by herself. She prevailed on the tennis court, capturing the 1966 and 1968 New England Women’s Tennis Championship crowns.

Playing several years before the passing of Title IX, she also was a captain and four-year starter of the lacrosse team (which she played in the same season as tennis) as well as the field hockey and basketball squads.

As a campus leader, Gaud was president of the Athletic Association, a class representative to the honor board, and class treasurer. She received the 1968 Charlotte Pyle Award, presented to the College’s outstanding senior athlete. Gaud graduated from Connecticut College with a degree in chemistry, and she was honored with the American Chemical Society Senior Award.

After college, Gaud continued her higher education, earning an M.S. (1970), and Ph.D. (1973), and M.B.A. (1982) from Northwestern. Professionally, she worked for three decades at Kraft Foods as a senior director of research from 1977-2007. Among her many achievements at Kraft was recurring a patent for developing a novel approach to fat-free foods.

Throughout her education and professional life, Gaud has followed Connecticut College’s mission by maintaining an active leadership role for the College and serving the community at large. Since retirement, she has continued her involvement in professional and community leadership positions. She also has been a leader for the College, serving the Class of 1968 as president, class agent, and 35th reunion chair.

Gaud’s athleticism is still evident, as she remains active playing golf and tennis on a regular basis.
