One of the most prolific tennis players in program history, Phil Craft '82 dominated the competition in a dazzling career that had a dramatic impact on the success and development of the team. He also helped blaze a trail for the men’s tennis program’s national recognition in years following. Playing with impeccable court demeanor, he was considered an ultimate sportsman by teammates and opponents.

Craft had an immediate impact on the Camel squad in his rookie year. Competing at number one singles and doubles, he was voted the team’s most valuable player that season. He continued competing in the top singles and doubles slots as a sophomore and received the squad’s 1980 Unsung Hero Award.

Craft spent his junior year abroad in England playing at the University of Bath, where he continued his tennis game. Playing in numerous tournaments in Europe and Romania, he was ranked as high as number three in the United Kingdom.

Craft returned to play for the Camels as a senior in 1982 and was elected team captain. He led Conn to an 8-3 mark, as he posted an unblemished 17-0 record, again earning the squad’s Most Valuable Player Award.

Playing in an era before Connecticut College was a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference, Craft often faced Division I opponents, making his achievements even more impressive. He earned national rankings in 1980 and 1982, climbing as high as ninth among Division III Players.

Graduating with honors, Craft earned a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1982. He maintained his support of the college’s tennis program, serving as a team assistant coach and advisor while assisting with the program’s recruiting process.

He continues to play tennis competitively in the Fairfield County (Connecticut) League. As a 20-year team member of the Country Club of Fairfield, he has been a team captain and currently holds the number one slot on his team.
