One of the most talented athletes to set foot on the Connecticut College campus, Maura Danahy ’02 rewrote the record books in a spectacular career for the cross country and track and field programs.

A three-time NCAA All-America in cross-country (1999, 2000, 2001), Danahy garnered All-NESCAC, All-New England, and NCAA All-Region honors in each of her four years. As a senior in 2001, she set school marks for the highest individual place at the following events: NESCAC Championship (4th place), New England Division III Championship (5th), All-New England Championship (10th), and NCAA Championship (11th).

During her career, Danahy broke eight school records and was the Camels’ top finisher in 34 of 35 races. Among her numerous accolades, she received Conn’s Most Valuable Runner Award (1999, 2000, 2001) and was elected a team captain as a junior and senior. Her leadership helped propel the Camels to a scintillating 320-57-2 (.847) record in dual and invitational meets, national rankings in 2000 and 2001, and the team’s highest conference finish (fifth) at the 2000 NESCAC Championship.

Danahy’s athletic dominance as a distance runner carried over to the track and field program. As a junior, Danahy was the 2001 New England Division III 5000 meter champion. The following year, she earned All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships, placing fifth in the 5000 meters. That spring at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, she again garnered All-America selection placing third in the 10,000 meters.

A five-time NCAA indoor qualifier and seven-time outdoor qualifier, Danahy broke 12 school records over her career. At the conference level, she was an All-NESCAC honoree in the 3,000m (1999, 2000, 2001), 10,000m (2002), and 4x800m relay (1999, 2001). She also was a nine-time All-ECAC honoree.

In 2001, the Connecticut Sportswriters Alliance honored Danahy as the state’s Female Athlete of the Year. At the conclusion of her career, she received Conn’s Anita DeFrantz ‘74 Award, given annually to the outstanding senior athletes for outstanding athletic achievements, leadership, and sportsmanship.

After graduation with a degree in human development, Danahy continued to run competitively, qualifying for the 2004 Olympic Trials in the marathon in a time of 2:47.
