Todd Taplin '89 distinguished himself as a versatile and talented two-sport standout and leader in soccer and ice hockey. A four-year starter at forward for the soccer team, Taplin excelled as one of the top play-makers in the program’s history. He totaled 41 goals, 35 assists, and 117 points, teaming with Hall of Famer Jeff Geddes ‘89 as one of the most formidable offensive duos in the country. Together, the exceptional pair scored 70% of the team’s goals in 1988 and 62% of Conn’s goals in their four-year careers.

Taplin was the team’s leading scorer in 1987 and 1988 and second-leading scorer in 1985 and 1986. He graduated as the program’s second all-time leading point scorer (117 career points), broke school records for career assists (35) and season assists (11 in 1985), and tied the Conn mark for game assists (3 in 1985).

During his impressive career, the economics and government major helped lead the squad to a four-year 39-17-2 record and three Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament appearances in 1985, 1986, and 1988. The Camels finished as a 1986 ECAC New England runner-up in a heartbreaking, five-overtime loss to Middlebury College. A team captain as a senior in 1988, Taplin was named to the New England Intercollegiate Soccer League All-Star Team and the NCAA All-New England Second Team. He also shared the squad’s co-Most Valuable Player Award with Geddes in their junior and senior seasons.

As a center on the ice hockey squad, Taplin also played a significant role, tallying 28 goals, 53 assists, and 81 points. He excelled in penalty killing situations, contributing to his team’s terrific 84% efficiency rate on the penalty kill over the course of his career, skating alongside line-mate Dave Talanian ‘88. Taplin helped lead the Camels to the ECAC South post-season tournament over all four years, finishing as a runner-up in 1986, semifinalist in 1988 and 1989, and quarterfinalist in 1987.
