A versatile athlete, Nigel Bentley '83 provided a foundation for the Connecticut College men’s ice hockey team, while also competing on the men’s varsity tennis team.

One of the ice hockey program’s pioneers, Bentley played on the first varsity squad in 1979-80 and then led the team to its first winning season in 1982-83. A four-year starter, he led the squad offensively each season, ending his career as Connecticut College’s all-time leading scorer with 144 points. The two-year co-captain graduated with several additional school records and earned the squad’s Most Valuable Player Award in 1980, 1981, and 1983.

As a four-year tennis competitor, Bentley played singles and doubles, receiving the team's Most Improved Player Award (1980) and Unsung Hero Award (1981, 1983).

In addition, he was a four-year member of the Athletic Department’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

After graduating, Bentley earned U.S. Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) membership and was head professional at country clubs in Massachusetts, Colorado and the West Indies. In 1995, he joined the tennis coaching staff at Division I Boston College.

Since 1999, he has directed the BC women’s tennis program, turning the Eagles into national contenders. Bentley remains an active competitor in New England tennis leagues and USPTA tournaments and special events.
