Ery Largay ’99 is one of the most accomplished student-athletes in the illustrious history of the Connecticut College sailing program coached by Jeff Bresnahan. Partnering with All-American crew Karen Renzulli Fallon ’99, and Julia Lodge Tang ’95, the versatile skipper competed in six national championships for the Camels: four women’s; one team race; and one single-handed. She led the Camels to the podium three times, finishing third overall at the 1997, 1998, and 1999 ICSA Women’s Dinghy National Championships. She and Renzulli Fallon finished second in A-Division in 1998. Largay was named a Women’s All-American Skipper in 1998, and a Women’s All-American Honorable Mention Skipper in 1997 and 1999. Furthermore, the 1998 team captain and team racing skipper contributed to a historic second-place finish at the 1998 New England Team Race Championship securing the Camels one-of-two regionally coveted Nationals’ berths. The Camels finished fifth at the 1998 ICSA Team Race National Championship and were the top NEISA team. Largay was also a trailblazer for the Women’s Ice Hockey team which debuted its varsity season coached by Melody Davidson in 1997-98. The first line center served as co-captain of the inaugural squad. She played in 55 games, scored 23 goals, and made 24 assists over her three-year career. Largay’s athletic ability, leadership, and sportsmanship on the water and the ice won her the institution’s Anita L. DeFrantz Award as outstanding female athlete for the class of 1999. Largay majored in Botany and studied the hemlock forests in the Arboretum under the guidance of Dr. William Niering and Glenn Dreyer. She earned a Master’s of Environmental Management degree from Yale and worked for 12 years as the Northeast Regional Vegetation Ecologist for NatureServe. The sailing standout raced for Team WHishbone and is a two-time ISAF Team Racing World Champion, a two-time US Sailing Team Racing National Champion, and a Wilson Trophy winner. She won the 2012 Leo J. Telesmanick Beetle Cat Championship and is a seven-time women’s-division
winner. Largay and her family lived on-board their 40-foot sailboat and cruised 4,000 nautical miles from Cape Cod to the Bahamas and back in 2020-2021.
